Promotores/Community Health Workers(CHWs)

Building capacity and increasing leadership among CHW/Promotores has been a cornerstone of our work. Ms. Holguin is an expert in the area of CHW/Promotores. She has extensive experience working to build capacities and core competencies for CHWs/Promotores working with at risk populations. Ms. Holguin was selected as one of 15 experts in the nation to serve in the National Steering Committee for Promotores de Salud.

Ms. Holguin is a recognized expert in the field of CHW/Promotores. In 2009 Ms. Holguin developed San Diego’s first Promotores Academy. She is also the founder of the annual Adelante Promotores Annual conference, now in existence for over ten years. She has developed many training opportunities for CHW/Promotores. Ms. Holguin is the founding Chair of the San Diego County Promotores Coalition and continues her involvement with the Coalition.

Community Health Worker Health Services Academy

The Community Health Worker Health Service Academy (CHW-HSA) is designed to equip CHWs with knowledge and skills to help clients/patients in addressing social determinants of health, self-management, compliance, and achieve improved health outcomes.  The CHW-HSA is designed for new CHWs who are starting in the field and experienced CHWs who want to reinforce knowledge. The training is specifically beneficial for CHWs who work with patients in collaboration with clinical settings. The training meets the California (DHCS) requirements for CHW Medi-Cal reimbursement (CalAim).

The CHW-HSA is an in-person, three and a half day training that covers all eleven core competencies as outlined in the updated National Community Health Advisor Study, C3 project, April 2016. The CHW-HSA is a 55 hour program and includes a 20-hour field experience part that allows participants to practice the competencies learned in the academy. 

Training covers all core competencies of the C3 project, including: Overview of the CHW model, roles, and core competencies, social determinants of health, capacity building, communication, interpersonal and relationship building, outreach, advocacy, education and facilitation, service coordination and navigation, individual and community assessments. evaluation and research, basic knowledge in public health, and professional skills and conduct.

Outreach, Deployment, & Community Engagement

Reaching the community with messaging and programming is a core competency for CHW/Promotores. CHW/Promotores are the bridge that connects communities to program/services. Our program utilizes outreach strategies and development of effective messaging designed to reach diverse populations. We specialize in reaching disengaged communities through multi-model strategies that engage residents in a meaningful and productive manner. We will deploy a team of CHW/Promotores to the community you are trying to reach. We will help engage residents and increase access to services.

Promotores Academy

The Promotores Academy builds the personal and professional skills of Promotores/ Community Health Workers (CHWs) and increases their ability to reach and connect community residents. Promotores/CHWs are peer educators who have the innate ability to build a trusting relationship with residents to engage them to take action towards health and wellness. Promotores/CHWs bridge the gap between communities and services and help build strong, vibrant, and engaged communities. The Academy covers the evidence-based core skills and competencies for CHWs as updated in the CHW Core Consensus (C3) Project (April 2016). The Academy is designed as a 16-hour curriculum (2 days) and training topics may be modified to fit the needs of the participants. The Academy was founded in 2009 by Margarita Holguin.

Academy covers the following training topics:

  • Promotores 101/The role of Promotores
  • Building Community Capacity/Networks
  • Effective Outreach
  • Presentation Skills
  • Advocacy
  • Effective Communication with Style
  • Leadership and Goal Setting, or
  • Health Basics: Pre- Diabetes, Diabetes, Hypertension, Asthma (2 topics covered)

Individual training topics are two-hour training courses. Topics covered in the Academy can also be delivered as individual two-three hour courses. All courses are offered in English or Spanish.
